Remembering Carvell Goodlow |LRC NEWS

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Carvell Goodlow. He was a mentee of CaughtUp, a ministry passionately committed to transforming the lives of young men in Southeast Detroit. Toson Knight, founder of the Caught Up Mentoring Program describes Carvell as a “vibrant, intelligent young man, with a positive attitude and full of life.”  Life in Detroit can be very challenging for young African American men, but despite the many adversities and challenges against him, Carvell worked hard to not let these circumstances define his future.

He got involved with Caught Up and a bond was formed with his mentor, Toson Knight, as well as with his peers in the program. Together they grew and became a close brotherhood that motivated each another to overcome the challenges they faced. He was part of Caught Up’s Saturday night live program, which consisted of bible study, life skills lessons, and basketball. It was through this mentorship program that he became affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church and eventually got baptized.

Carvell was a member of the Detroit Center SDA Church in Detroit, MI. Just this past summer he was the speaker for its July 28th Youth Sabbath. “Carvell was such a great young man who turned his life around,” said Pastor Keynel Cadet of Detroit Center. “In these sad moments, we are left feeling lost and devastated.”

Carvell was accepted in to several colleges but chose Oakwood University in Huntsville Alabama because to his love for Christ. While at Oakwood, Carvell got involved in ministry and shared his story to motivate, inspire and encourage others in their quest for knowledge. We are saddened that his life ended so soon.

Carvell was in his sophomore year at Oakwood University. He was shot and killed on Sunday September 16th in Hunstville AL. Huntsville Police are investigating. Please keep his immediate family, his church family and his Oakwood family in prayer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 25th at the Burns SDA Church in Detroit, MI at 10AM. CaughtUp Mentoring is asking for your monetary support to assist with burial costs. The loss of young life is one that no parent or family has in their plans. To assist with any donation you can give, please visit the CaughtUp website and select Donate.
